These major stores know that many holiday shoppers start shopping the day after Thanksgiving. If they can get you into their store first, then you will probably spend more than you planned.

- Check for latest items
These stores offer loss leader items with limited availability to draw you in. They hope you buy something else when these items run out. Savvy shoppers who are early risers often line up before the stores open to get these great deals, especially things like $400 laptop computers and flat panel TVs.
Many of the sales that will be offered on Black Friday are leaked out by all sorts of web sites ahead of time. I am using the Black Friday Discussion Forum to record the sales ads as we find them.
Remember, these are often "leaks and rumors" and not officially announced sale prices.
Black Friday means most retailers don't show a profit for the year until this day after Thanksgiving. They basically cover expenses until the Holiday season then on "Black Friday" they turn profitable (black ink rather than red ink...)

A year or two ago on a big sale like this I bought a SEARS 18V Craftsman cordless drill at Orchard Supply for less than the replacement cost of the battery that was not holding a charge on an old 12V drill.
